Tradition plays a significant role in shaping faith and practice, both in biblical times and today. The Bible addresses tradition in both positive and negative lights, cautioning against human traditions that distort God’s truth while upholding traditions that honor Him. Here are key Bible verses about tradition and how they relate to our faith.

The Danger of Human Traditions
Jesus often warned against human traditions that contradicted God’s commands. While traditions can be valuable, they must never replace God’s truth. The Pharisees clung to rituals that led them away from God’s heart, and Jesus exposed these empty traditions.
Mark 7:8
“For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”
Matthew 15:6
“In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.”
Colossians 2:8
“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”
Isaiah 29:13
“And so the Lord says, ‘These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.'”
Galatians 1:14
“I was far ahead of my fellow Jews in my zeal for the traditions of my ancestors.”
Holding Fast to Godly Traditions
While Jesus warned against human traditions, the Bible also teaches that some traditions are good and worth keeping. These are the teachings handed down by the apostles, rooted in Scripture, and aligned with God’s will.
2 Thessalonians 2:15
“With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on to you both in person and by letter.”
1 Corinthians 11:2
“I am so glad that you always keep me in your thoughts and that you are following the teachings I passed on to you.”
Philippians 4:9
“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
2 Timothy 1:13
“Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus.”
Jude 1:3
“Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people.”
Jesus’ Teachings Over Tradition
Jesus made it clear that His teachings should take precedence over traditions. The religious leaders of His time often placed human customs above God’s commands, but Jesus always pointed people back to God’s truth.
Matthew 5:17
“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.”
Matthew 7:24
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”
John 8:31
“Jesus said to the people who believed in him, ‘You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.'”
John 14:23
“Jesus replied, ‘All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.'”
Mark 12:24
“Jesus replied, ‘Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.'”
Tradition and the Early Church
The early church upheld certain traditions that were based on the teachings of Christ and the apostles. These traditions helped to preserve the faith and pass it down through generations.
Acts 2:42
“All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.”
1 Corinthians 15:3
“I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.”
2 Thessalonians 3:6
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received from us.”
Romans 6:17
“Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.”
Hebrews 13:7
“Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.”

Rejecting Worldly Traditions
Some traditions in the world are contrary to God’s ways. As followers of Christ, we are called to reject anything that contradicts the truth of Scripture.
1 Peter 1:18
“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.”
Jeremiah 10:3
“Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol.”
Matthew 23:5
“Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.”
Isaiah 2:6
“For the Lord has rejected his people, the descendants of Jacob, because they have filled their land with practices from the East and with sorcerers, as the Philistines do. They have made alliances with pagans.”
Colossians 2:20-22
“You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, ‘Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!’? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them.”
Faith Over Rituals
God values a heart of faith more than empty religious rituals. While traditions can be meaningful, they should never replace a true relationship with God.
Micah 6:8
“No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Amos 5:21-23
“‘I hate all your show and pretense—the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies. I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings. Away with your noisy hymns of praise! I will not listen to the music of your harps.'”
James 1:27
“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”
Matthew 6:7
“When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again.”
Hosea 6:6
“I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.”
God’s Word Above All
Ultimately, God’s Word must take priority over all traditions. Scripture is the final authority for faith and practice, guiding believers to live in truth.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”
John 17:17
“Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.”
Deuteronomy 4:2
“Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you.”
Revelation 22:18-19
“And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.”
